"South-East New Mexico Welcomes Earthlings of all Flavors"
Long before Star-Trek, Star-Wars, and Battleship Galactica, the Aliens and UFO's were said to have chosen SE New Mexico for a visit. Roswell, specifically, was the municipality near where in 1947 an Air Force surveillance "weather balloon" crashed. The event received little notice until around 1978, when a number of UFO aficionados "revised" history to infer that the "Roswell Incident" was actually the crash of an alien spaceship with a crew aboard. The theory went on to conclude that the US military had actually recovered the alien inhabitants of the vessel and transported them to a secret lab, while covering up the whole affair for decades.
An array of "eye-witnesses" and the US Air Force issued competing, conflicting reports and books, much to the delight of many area residents as tourism boomed, starting with the 1990's. Interest in aliens and UFO's persists to this day, generating a good deal of commerce. The human reaction to the vagaries of this controversy has even formed the basis for an academic theory, described in Wikipedia as the:
"Roswellian Syndrome Prominent skeptics Joe Nickell and co-author James McGaha identified a myth-making process, which they called the "Roswellian Syndrome". In this syndrome a myth is proposed to have five distinct stages of development: Incident, Debunking, Submergence, Mythologizing, and Reemergence and Media Bandwagon Effect. The authors predicted that the Roswellian Syndrome would "play out again and again", in other UFO and conspiracy-theory stories."
It's been a fortuitous turn of events for the rather ordinary and not-too-attractive community of Roswell, which is normally dependent on hum-drum earthling activities such as farming, ranching, and petroleum production.
Notable earthlings who have called Roswell, NM "home" are: Pat Garrett-the sheriff who shot Billy the Kid, Sam Donaldson-TV journalist, Robert Goddard-rocketry pioneer, Roger Staubach-pro-football quarterback, John Denver-singer, Nancy Lopez-pro golfer and Demi Moore-actress.
However, for the believers and skeptics alike, make your reservations now for the Annual Roswell UFO Festival, scheduled for the 4th of July holiday!
May the Force Be With YOU!
